Our home is a traditional 1950s semi-detached house situated in Alwoodley, in the outskirts of Leeds. Alwoodley is in the northern outskirts of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, and is one of the city's most affluent areas. It was built mostly after World War II has lots of of green spaces, and is well known for its golf courses. The Eccup reservoir, home to a growing population of red kites, is also nearby. The area around Alwoodley has many stately homes and parks, such as Harewood House (10 minutes away) and Roundhay Park (10 minutes away).

A little further afield is the elegant spa town of Harrogate (20 minutes away), the ancient market town of Ripon (45 minutes away) and the ancient city of York (45 minutes away) which was inhabited by the Romans and the Vikings and has the largest cathedral (York Minster) in northern Europe.

We are within close reach of six national parks:
-The Yorkshire Dales (min. 40 minutes away)
-The North York Moors (min. 1 hour away)
-The Peak District (min. 1 hour away)
-The Lake District (min. 2 hours away)
-Northumbria (min. 2 hrs and 30 minutes away)
-Snowdonia (min. 2hrs and 40mins away).

A number of areas nearby have literary associations:
-Haworth – Brontes (50 minutes away)
-Hebden Bridge – Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes (55 minutes away)
-Coxwold – 18th century novelist Laurence Sterne (55 minutes away)
-Grasmere – William Wordsworth (2 hours 20 minutes away)
-Stratford – Shakespeare (2 hours 40 minutes away)

London is only 2˝ hours away on a high-speed rail link and the 12th and 13th century university towns Oxford and Cambridge are within driving distance (Cambridge 2 hours 55 minutes, Oxford 3 hours 20 minutes). Leeds-Bradford airport is about 20 minutes away with minimum 2 hour journeys to Paris, Madrid, Prague, Stockholm, Rome, Berlin, and all other European cities.

Finally, for the music/ film fans, Liverpool, the home of The Beatles, is only 1 hour and 40 minutes drive away and actors Sean Bean, Christopher Eccleston and Peter O'Toole came from Yorkshire.

The advantage of our location is that it is within a short drive of city facilities: Leeds has top-quality theatres, cinemas, restaurants and bars, and beautiful Yorkshire countryside with lots of opportunities for cycling, hiking, fishing, boating and visiting historic villages and towns.

More Home Exchange Info:
Destination wanted:
Primarily we are looking for a home exchange in New York City in the summer of 2009. We are also considering a home exchange somewhere in the UK over the Christmas/ New Year (2008/09) period, possibly London.
Additional information:
Our house is on a cul-de-sac (no through road), and so has very little traffic. It is very friendly and quiet. Our house is cosy and relatively (by American standards!) small, but is comfortable, perfect for a family, and sleeps 4-6 people (if 6, two would be on separate double sofa beds).

Downstairs, the kitchen is fitted with modern appliances: oven, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge, food processor, etc. There is also a circular table seating four, and a pantry with plenty of storage space. Through the hall in the dining room there is a table that comfortably seats six, a large selection of books, and French windows out onto the patio. Next door to this is the living room which has two sofas, a rocking chair, a TV with VCR, DVD and Freeview. We also have an extensive collection of DVDs (Jane and David's pride and glory!), which we are willing to lend out.

Upstairs, there are four bedrooms, one is converted into a study, and one is in our large loft conversion. The master bedroom has a double bed, bay windows and spacious wardrobes and drawers. The second bedroom is my daughter’s room with a single bed, a large amount of fiction books, a small TV and DVD player, wardrobe space, a desk and a comfortable double sofa bed. The third bedroom is used as a study with a huge selection of fiction and non- fiction books, a computer with high-speed wireless Internet, a printer and a desk. Also on this floor there is a bathroom and toilet with a fitted bath and powerful shower. On the 2nd storey is the fourth bedroom, my son’s room, which has a single bed, large wardrobes, lots of books and a comfortable sofa double bed. He also has a TV, Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube and Nintendo Wii with a large selection of games which he is willing to share. His room is en suite with a stand-alone shower.

Outside, we have a small-medium front garden and a medium-large back garden with well-stocked, traditional English borders and a greenhouse (with tomatoes!). There is also a patio with an outside table (which can easily be moved further up the garden) seating up to six people in a shaded quiet area of the garden - perfect for eating out in the long summer evenings!

We have two cars, one of which we can exchange, which we park in our drive and in a space in front of our house. We do have a garage, but it is mainly used for storage of deck chairs, sports equipment, etc (any of which are available to borrow), and there is an extra freezer in it too, so there is no room for a car!
About Home Exchange Owners :
We are a family of four, consisting of:

John, a 54-year-old English Literature Lecturer in a Further Education college. John is very interested in gardening, hiking, literature, classical music, history, food and politics. He is currently writing a murder mystery novel set in the Yorkshire Dales. He regularly attends chamber music concerts, and particularly likes string quartets, with his favourite composers being Schubert and Beethoven.

Jackie, a 50 year old Primary School Teacher who loves walking, history, good food, cooking, reading and politics. She is also superb in the kitchen, and her specialities are stew and dumplings, Eve's pudding, and fruit crumbles.

David, a 20 year old student of History at Wadham College, Oxford University who enjoys walking in the countryside, discussing things (just some being the EU, Social and Public Policy, Education, Equality, Public Transport, feminism, Urban planning, Conservation and Local Government), video gaming, photography, reading and cycling.

Jane, a 17-year-old high school student. Jane loves film; she is a keen amateur scriptwriter and is working on her first script with a friend. For her, there is nothing better than going to the cinema. She also loves reading, video gaming, singing, acting and dancing and is working on her Grade 8 Voice. She is also politically active, and is passionate about many political and social causes (such as human rights, animal rights, conservation and social security.)

Daisy, an affectionate and beautiful 13 year old three-legged tortoise shell and white cat. She loves cat milk, sleeping, the sun, finding comfortable places to sleep and being petted.

We may also be traveling with Clare (20), David's girlfriend who is also reading History at Oxford University.

We love the serenity of the countryside as well as the excitement of the cities, and are very interested in home exchanges in the USA, particularly New York, Chicago and anywhere in California.
