The neighbourhood Our house is located 15 minutes west of downtown Ottawa, Ontario in a small suburb (population 20,000) called Stittsville. Our neighbourhood is a quiet, friendly residential area where you can walk to various schools, grocery stores, restaurants, shops, parks, medical and dental clinics, pharmacies and other amenities. Close to several golf courses, biking, hiking and running trails, recreation centre with swimming and indoor skating rinks. Travelling to the east 5 km, Stittsville runs into the city of Kanata which has many large stores and restaurants. The OC Transpo (public bus system) provides transportation to and from Stittsville and downtown Ottawa. Ottawa Canada Ottawa, Canada’s capital city has been described as one of the most beautiful capitals in the world. Ottawa is a bilingual, culturally rich city with a metropolitan population of approximately 1 million people, yet it still maintains the accessibility and atmosphere of a smaller city. Less than an hour’s drive from the American border, Ottawa is centrally located with access to two of Canada major urban centres, Montreal is 1.5 hours away and Toronto is within 4 hours. Ottawa has a charm quite unlike most urban centres. It is the home to Parliament Hill and enjoys the visual and performing arts centres of a major city, as well as other big city attractions such as nightclubs, restaurants and shopping in the Byward Market. Ottawa boasts a thriving arts community that features the National Arts Center, diverse local theatres, and lively music scenes with many different festivals with the world famous Tulip Festival in May (10,000 tulips in bloom) through to Winterlude, with the largest skating rink in the world (8 km long). The city’s cultural scene includes the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Canadian War Museum, Canadian Museum of Nature and 13 art galleries. The city also supports the NHL Senators hockey team. Ottawa contains far more natural and undeveloped space than most cities of its size and provides easy access to hiking, biking, skiing (alpine and cross county), sailing and other activities in the surrounding area. Gatineau Park in Quebec (30 minutes away) and Algonquin Park (1.5 hours away) provide natural wilderness areas for camping, hiking, biking, and canoeing. |
