Very nice upper duplex apartment located in a lively neighborhood on a quiet street with lots of trees. The house was built in the 1930s, has boiseries and wooden floors and is very well lit. There are two bedrooms, a living room (with sofa bed/futon), a dining room, a kitchen (+ breakfast nook), two smaller rooms (offices), one bathroom (shower + bath) and a solarium. There is one small balcony out front (street side) and a larger one in the back, quieter, where you can have a quiet meal. We are about 25 minutes (by subway) away from the heart of Montreal, and perhaps about the same to get to the popular Plateau Mont-Royal (by bus or subway). The flat is very nice, clean and well maintained ; mt furniture is modest and adequate for simple needs.
The neighborhood we live in is now called Notre-Dame-de-Grace (NDG), but it used to be called Snowdon. It's a very diverse part of town that is host to people from just about everywhere (perhaps slightly more anglophone than francophone). There is a lively commercial stretch just around the corner where you'll find fruit markets, a drugstore, many banks, a supermarket, various shops and quite a few restaurants ; there is also a park not too far away (plus of course Mount-Royal park). One of Montreal's main attractions, Saint-Joseph Oratory, is just minutes away (or about 25 minutes if walking). Deli-Snowdon, about 10 minutes walking dist., makes the best smoked meat in town (better than Schwartz!) and Cote-St-Luc BBQ serves fantastic chicken & fries (also walking dist.). Westmount, where you'll see Montreal's most spectacular residences, is adjacent to NDG and will make for very nice day walks ; so will the Monkland village (even closer than Westmount). Victoria street, about 25 minutes (walking dist.), is one of the more ethnically diverse areas in the city ; there is an Indian restaurant there called "Dev" which I find is one of the best in town (and very affordable - the baigan bartha is also delicious). In summary, we are well connected to the city centre : Snowdon subway station is 5 minutes away and from there, you can reach most major attractions in under 30 minutes ; there are also a few buses that go downtown (#17, #166) or across the mountain (#51).
