Oct 28, 2006 - Two Fruits and The Big Apple

Reported by JoMar All rights reserved.

We are actually doing this entry in Taiwan as we did not have a single minute to do it in New York.

We LOVED Manhattan!! Marc has been to N.Y. before but this was my first trip. I can honestly say that this city is on "my must return to" list. I cannot wait to go back one day for another visit!!!

Our flight over from Toronto was about 2 hours, we had to circle a bit over the city as the airport at JFK was backed up. When we arrived at JFK it was one of the easiest airport to city journey's we have ever done. Free airtrain (that's like Vancouver skytrain) to the subway, and then the subway takes you right into Manhattan! The ride on the subway was cool. Rappers coming on board singing and trying to sell their CD'S! When we got to our hostel there was a message from Deen who got there a day before us to meet her at her hotel. Marc and I thought something was up when the man at our hostel referred to several people leaving a message as opposed to just Deen. When we got to the girls hotel; SURPRISE!! Sarah was there also. Needless to say we were thrilled to see both of them and ended up spending our second and third day in Manhattan sharing a hotel room.

We stayed in Times Square which blew us away with all the gigantic billboards and televisions advertising everything from Broadway shows to American Express ! We also saw the naked singing cowboy a few times which was neat since we just saw him on the news in Vancouver before we left. For those of you who don't know, he is this nice looking guy who stands on the boulevard in Times Square and sings, wearing only underwear, boots,a cowboy hat and his guitar! I don't know how he does it, we froze our butts off the whole time we were there!! The buzz in Times Square is AMAZING. For those of you who have been there you know what I'm talking about!! It's very exciting and you just feel so alive when you walk through it!!

The four of us did a two day hop-on hop-off bus tour of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Brooklyn was nice but not comparable to Manhattan! Very exciting!

We visited Grand Central Station and The Waldorf Astoria hotel; both were amazingly beautiful! Also visited Rockefeller Center with all the flags of the world and the ice rink. All four of us thought the rink was much smaller then it appears in films!

Of course we saw the Trump buildings that bear his name in HUGE gold letters, can you say EGO?!

Greenwich or Green Witch to some people (inside joke) was a very cool neighborhood and of course very gay. It was here that the gay revolution started in a gay bar called The Stonewall. The two day riots changed many lives forever! There is even a very charming street in this area called Gay Street.

Manhattan has so many neat little areas that are so distinctive from each other. Hell's Kitchen, Soho,Tribeca,Chelsea,The East Village and The Lower East Side, Little Italy. And of course the largest Chinatown in the U.S. Very cool neighbourhoods!

Also visited the rich area's like The upper West and East sides. This is were Glenn Close bought a 3 million dollar one-bedroom condo! Also saw the building's were Meryl Streep, Mary Tylor Moore, Michael Douglas and Denzel Washington live. Very Cool!!

In Brooklyn we saw the building were Barbra Streisand was born. Wow, has she come a long way. This is the same neighbourhood were Woody Allen, Robert DeNiro and Neil Diamond grew up.

Of course we visited Ground Zero. It is surrounded by a chain fence with huge memorial pictures and a timeline of the disaster. It was a very moving experience to be there. They are currently building The Freedom Tower on this site.

Of course no visit to Manhattan would be complete without a ferry over to The Statue of Liberty. She is amazing when you see her up close and realize just how large she is. We didn't have time to visit Ellis Island on this day. Next time!

On our last day the four of us went to a tried and true New York Deli!  This one was one of the famous one's in Manhattan with dozens of snapshots of celebrities who have eaten there. The sandwich's and the New York cheesecakes where enormous!!

The four of us really covered a lot of territory in 4 days. We were exhausted every night. But that didn't stop us from going out till 4am at least one night!

I have often heard people say that you only need a few days in New York. Well I can't believe that. There is so much to see and do. So many cool and interesting parts of the city to visit. We didn't even get a chance to see a Broadway show!!! I for one can't wait to return and do it up right. Take my time to explore all the cool areas and a few shows also!!!  I think it is safe to say that all four of us really loved New York and Manhattan especially Rocks !!!

Sarah and Deen it was so good to spend some time with you in New York before we headed to Asia. Perfect.

See you guys in Indonesia

and of course marc also
