Farragut Naval Training Center
by Henry G. Brown Jr
Bet you never knew that the North Idaho Panhandle has several active "in the water submarines" in addition to several surface sessels that have stealth technology in a large lake that is over 1150 feet deep and extends just south of the Canadian boarder. That's correct, a Naval Research / Testing Base is still located in northern Idaho, the remains of the largest naval training center in it's time, with over 300,000 recruits being trained and the largest naval hospital in the North West in that period.
The Brig still stands and serves as a museum to show the history of then, the Farragut Naval Training Center. The base is now the Idaho State Park over 3,000 acres of wildlife, camp sites, boating, even an airport for the model airplane buffs. Several national and world boy scout jamboree's past have been held at this beautiful historic location, a place everyone must visit and see.
Located at the end of Idaho's shortest State Highway #54 and next to the small resort town of Bayview, Idaho, overlooking the Lake Pend O'reille (Ponder Ray). You will be happy you came to visit this historic location.
