Costa Brava
Beautiful Beaches, Salvador Dali, and Human Towers |
|
Costa Brava in northern Spain borders with France. We traveled by car from France to Roses where we rented small but very comfortable apartment.
From all beaches in the neighborhood our favorite was the least crowded Cadaques Beach. Other beautiful beaches ; Port de la Selva, L’Escala, L’Estartit and Illes Medes (also diving center and natural Park)
Port Ligat is a very small village walking distance from Cadaques. It is famous for the house of surrealist painter Salvador Dali (museum since 1997). Dali spent most of his childhood and youth in this house decorated by his wife Gala. The hose, of course, displays numerous works of the artist. All lovers of surrealism should also visit Salvador’s Dali place of birth, Figueres, where the artist founded Teatro-Museo Dali http://www.salvador-dali.org
Apart from Dali, this picturesque area attracted many other artists, among them Pablo Picasso and Paul Eluard.
We were fortunate to watch in Figueres human tower building competition (castellers festival). The highest towers can be as high as five-story buildings.
Human tower building involves many difficult elements and it is chilling to watch small boy (anxaneta) crowning the tower at the top. Falling of such human tower can of course be very dangerous for the participants. Human tower building competition is a Catalonian tradition that can be observed in Valls, Tarragona, and Vilafranca del Penedes.
Another MUST SEE when visiting Costa Brava is the Catalonia's capital of Barcelona - the “Gaudi” city.
