Will You Learn a Second Language at Home or Abroad?

There are now many ways to learn foreign language. This means that it is possible to find the one which best suits your goals and your personality. One of the biggest choices any new language student has to think about is whether to study at home or go abroad to do it. The following are some of the factors to bear in mind.

The Excitement

This first factor is difficult to quantify but you are best person to judge whether the thought of studying while living abroad gets you excited. Of course, the simple act of learning a foreign tongue is excitement enough for a lot of people as well. It is a personal decision you need to make but it certainly wouldn’t do any harm to find out the options and see which idea gets you most interested in the subject.

The Cost

Even if the thought of going abroad gets you excited you will need to consider the cost issue before you do anything else. This approach is sure to work out more expensive than studying at home. Apart from the cost of traveling to the county of your choice you also need to think about the expense of living there for a while without working. You aren’t going to pick up an awful lot in a week or two, so an extended stay would really be advisable if you want to take advantage of this learning method. If you choose to stay at home then you can keep the cost down but still hire a native speaking teacher so you don’t miss out on the chance to learn the language well.

The Speed of Learning

A huge advantage to going abroad to study a foreign language is that you can learn it a lot more quickly if you put your mind to it. This is because you can immerse yourself in the language and the culture while you are there. Of course, if you are lucky then you might be able to do this without leaving home anyway. If you are looking for a great place to take Chinese lessons in Toronto then you should also think about making contact with the local Chinese community to give you the chance to immerse yourself in the language.
