A bit of History:
The house as it is today would be dated around the end of the 17th century,
begin of the 18th. The house has the typical style of the traditional house
of this part of the country.
The foundations would be older, they have been compared to the Roman Villa
of Vesqueville (A. Malthys – Archéologica Belgica 159), the
way they are buried on the garden’s side would be an evidence of it.
The three-cells model: humans, live stock, reserves: all under the same
slate roof, the hood, called the « tchépo » allowed to
do farm work protected from the bad weather.
Inside, we find the same intelligence: the opening are on the Southern
side, the large open fire was warming the « pel » through the
cast-iron plate (or contrecœur). This one deserves some explanation:
it has been made in Orval during the Jansenist period (1st quarter of the
18th century).
In the central part, the three theological virtues: Faith, eyes covered;
Hope, the anchor; and Charity, a burning hart. The four other women are
the cardinal virtues: Force (column), Justice (sword), Temperance (cup),
Prudence (mirror and snake). The sentence "Ardet Amans Spe Nixa Fides":
The Faith supported by Hope burns from the fire of Charity.
Why is this cast-iron plate reversed? The only reason we have found would
be linked to the French Revolution, no house was allowed to bear religious
signs, but getting rid off such a good cast-iron plate was not the kind
of thing we do in the Ardenne, it would have then been reversed, waiting
for better days.
Have a good stay!

Avioth
In the middle of an undulating landscape of meadows, forests and ponds the monumental basilica of Avioth surprises the traveller. At the very beginning of the XIIth century, one discovered, in a bush of spines, a statue of the Virgin who quickly became the object of a significant pilgrimage, at the origin of the imposing monument which reached us in spite of the vicissitudes of a disturbed history.
Indeed, property of the count de Chiny, Avioth became in the XIVth century possession of the duchy of Luxembourg from which it followed the destinies, until passing under the Spanish domination in 1556 for its greater damage. Calms will return only after the taking of Montmédy by the French in 1657. Jean Delhôtel, priest of Avioth of 1636 to 1682, has been the witness of the end of this tragic time, and has left us, in 1668, with the history of his parish and his church.
Built throughout the XIVth century, the basilica of Avioth is a major building. The elegance and the homogeneity of its architecture, the importance of the iconographic program of the western frontage, a stone furniture of the XVth century, canopies of the XIVth, a statuary of great quality, do one of the most beautiful Lorraine monuments. The basilica is the repository of the statue of Our-Lady, which was considered to give a "respite" to the died little children, time that they are baptized, which made of Avioth, until the XVIIth century, the most famous pilgrimage "with respite" of Lorraine. In the south of the basilica rises a charming monument of the beginning of XVth century, single in its kind, known under the name of "recevress" and which seems well to have been the "hôtel of freed city "of Avioth.
