Explore the amazing state of North Carolina, where stunning natural beauty meets the romance of the Old South. The western part of the state is home to the Blue Ridge Mountains, covered in forests beautiful year round. In spring the dogwood trees and huge mountain rhododendrons blossom in shades of white, pinks, and purples. The summers turn the valleys a lush green, carpeted in native wildflowers. In the fall, the trees set the mountains afire in shades of deep red, gold, and orange. Winter brings a stillness in the snow covered pines, reminiscent of a Currier and Ives painting. The mountains are also the location of the Biltmore, an 8,000 acre estate complete with formal gardens, a winery, world class spa, and the mansion ranked among the top ten architectural wonders of the US. The eastern part of the state is no less spectacular with our Atlantic beaches. The Outer Banks are largely undisturbed, preserved dunes and wetlands much the same as when the Wright Brothers flew over them in that historic moment at Kitty Hawk. Wilimington boasts not only beaches, but old southern plantations where you can feel like Scarlett O’Hara; or if your entertainment tastes are a bit more modern, visit the locations where they shot the TV shows Dawson’s Creek and One Tree Hill. Durham is in the middle Piedmont region of bustling modern cities filled with museums, art galleries, downtown nightlife, shopping, and venues for bluegrass bands, NC Symphony, Carolina Ballet, Broadway musicals like Wicked, acts like Blue Man Group and Cirque du Soleil, and performers Jerry Seinfield and U2. If its sports you’re after, there’s no fiercer rivalry than the UNC/Duke basketball games. Durham is perhaps most famous for its food—voted the #1 foodie city in America by Bon Appétit magazine in 2009. North Carolina can hold your attention for years, but if you so desire, it’s also a great launching point to explore the East Coast, with New York, Washington D.C., Atlanta, and Disneyworld all within a day’s drive.
