Our home is an absolutely charming 900-year-old stone house in the South of France in what is officially listed as one of France's most beautiful villages, St Guilhem le Desert.
We have a terrace and a small garden, and with two children ourselves (aged 5 and 7), the house is equipped to welcome children, although the stairs don't really lend themselves to small toddlers (there are two flights). The village (which is largely pedestrianised) is set amid olive groves and vineyards, with terrific farmers markets nearby, so you should expect to eat well. In addition, there's a neighbouring village called Montpeyroux which is renowned for its wine: bon vivants should be kept content. We're on one of the traditional Saint Jame's/Santiago routes from Arles, which means that St Guilhem is part of a UNESCO world heritage site. If you're interested in historical charm or walking, then this is for you; there are also all kinds of outdoor activities in the vicinity (quads, climbing, caving, mountain biking, canoeing to name but a few). The area really buzzes in Summer, with gingettes (Summer restaurants with music and dancing) springing up alongside the nearby river Herault. There are loads of cultural visits within easy reach with a car (think templar castles and abandoned villages, as well as Avignon, Nimes etc). Bedrooms: Two bedrooms with large double beds, two bedrooms with single beds, and a room with a large convertible couch. |
