To the French, many of whom dream of living here, Aix-en-Provence is the ‘Ville d’art, Ville d’eau,’ or, the ‘City of art and water.’ Upon your arrival, you will understand why. Picture-perfect squares composed of medieval and renaissance golden stone buildings, and sculpted fountains, linked by narrow cobbled streets. The Romans founded Aix for its thermal waters; in the middle ages it was a peaceful city known for its law courts; and today it is buzzing and cosmopolitan. Our apartment is ideally situated in the heart of Aix, on the street that Paul Cezanne—father of modern painting—decided to live his last years.
Aix perfectly caters to the young and old: the streets and squares are lined with cafes, restaurants, shops, churches, and art galleries. It is a perfect place to relax, as the historic downtown (where we live) is almost all pedestrian.
If you are willing to branch out, Aix is close to many favorite destinations. The Luberon is 30 minutes by car to the north; the sparkling Mediterranean Sea is 30 minutes south. Spain is three hours west; Italy two hours east.
During winter, Aix has a good climate: sunshine all day, and great blue sky! Perfect for sightseeing.
