We have a two-story century Victorian house with lots of character. There is a large kitchen/ dining/ living space with sliding doors access to a south facing deck and landscaped backyard. Also on the main floor is a large play room equipped with lots of toys perfect for the 2-6 year old crowd, a den with a couch and TV, a gorgeous bathroom with walk in shower, and mudroom with laundry. The den has a comfy double pull out couch. There are three bedrooms upstairs as well as a bathroom with claw foot tub. There is a queen sized bed, double bed, and a single bed (+ crib) in the bedrooms.
The house has a wireless internet access and we could arrange for cleaning/ gardening services during your stay.
NEIGHBORHOOD
Halifax is a small port city in a region of about 350,000. Our neighborhood, which is called the North End, is a pretty trendy ‘up and coming’ area with a nice mix of single family houses, duplexes and small apartments. There has recently been a baby boom in our neighbourhood, but there are also lots art college students who rent here, as well as older people who have lived in the neighbourhood for years. There are lots of great places to walk to from our house:
Less than five minutes walk: a small park, local food market, bakery, an awesome diner, and trendy café, a middle eastern food market, several antique/ decorating shops, lots of bus stops, convenience stores, a bike shop, Mexican restaurant, creperie.
Less than 10 minutes walk: major grocery store, library, kids splash park, Hydrostone Market with French bakery, Starbucks, Jamaican restaurant, yarn shop.
Less than 20 minutes walk: Large fitness centre with pool/ squash, rink, the Halifax commons park (large green space with ball fields, skateboard park, speed skating oval, and playground), NS Natural History Museum, Citadel Hill National Historic Site.
30 minute walk to downtown Halifax, with restaurants, art galleries, museums and great shops.
OTHER INFORMATION
The weather is best in Nova Scotia in Summer and Fall. Halifax is home to three universities and a world renowned art college. There are ocean beaches less than 30 minutes drive from the city and the water is warm enough to swim in August/ September, although some swim year round as apparently some nearby beaches offer world class surfing conditions. The city has a number of freshwater lakes with offer great swimming in the summer (the closest is less than 5 minutes drive away, but there are at least a dozen within a 10 minute drive!). One hours drive away down the south shore will take you to scenic places like Lunenberg (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and other picturesque seaside towns like Mahone Bay, Chester, and Liverpool. Also an hours drive inland will take you to the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia’s agricultural heartland, which is a beautiful place to visit to pick fruit, and sample local wines and cheeses. About 1.5 – 2 hours drive from Halifax, you can reach the North Shore, with a number of beaches on the warm Northumberland Strait. Three hours drive you reach scenic and lovely Cape Breton Island and also Prince Edward Island.
We have lots of bicycles you could use, (as well as helmets) and we also have some camping gear you could use.
We have a lovely orange cat that would need to be fed (and loved!). It’s possible that we could have friends look after him if necessary.
